Skin Needling | Dermapen 4 Microneedling
Skin needling, also called microneedling, uses a powered device with fine needles to create controlled micro-channels in the skin.
Dermapen 4 allows the practitioner to select the needle depth and speed according to the treatment area, skin characteristics and concern being assessed.
The procedure is intended to initiate a controlled healing response; any visible change develops gradually and varies between people.
At Face and Body Adelaide, Dermapen 4 microneedling is consultation-led and individually planned.
It may be discussed for selected acne scars, enlarged pores, uneven texture, fine lines and other suitable skin-quality concerns.
It is not automatically appropriate for every concern or skin type, and no particular degree or duration of improvement can be guaranteed.
What is Dermapen 4 microneedling?
Dermapen 4 is a professional microneedling device. A sterile, single-use needle cartridge moves vertically across the prepared skin while the practitioner controls treatment depth and speed. According to the manufacturer, the professional device can operate across a range of depths, with deeper settings reserved for appropriately assessed concerns and trained use. The maximum capability of a device is not a recommended setting for every person or area.
The procedure does not use laser light or radiofrequency energy. It differs from RF microneedling, which combines needle insertion with radiofrequency energy delivered into tissue. It also differs from chemical peeling and laser resurfacing. These options have different mechanisms, recovery profiles and risks; one treatment is not automatically better for everyone.
Concerns That May Be Assessed
- Selected acne scars and other suitable superficial scars
- Rough or uneven skin texture
- The appearance of enlarged pores
- Fine lines and selected skin-quality concerns
- Uneven-looking tone or selected pigmentation concerns, where clinically appropriate
- Selected stretch marks or body scars
- General skin-quality concerns where microneedling may be proportionate
Assessment matters because similar-looking concerns may have different causes. Acne scars may be rolling, boxcar, ice-pick or tethered; visible pores can be influenced by oil production, scarring and skin structure; and pigmentation may be affected by sun exposure, inflammation, hormones or an underlying skin condition. Microneedling cannot correct every cause and may aggravate some concerns if used at the wrong time or intensity.
How treatment depth and intensity are selected
Dermapen 4 treatment is not a single universal setting. Needle depth, speed, number of passes and treatment coverage may be adjusted according to the area, concern, skin thickness, sensitivity, pigment history and previous response. Thin, mobile or bony areas require a different approach from thicker cheek or body skin. Deeper or more aggressive treatment does not guarantee a better or longer-lasting result and may increase recovery and complication risk.
A conservative or staged approach may be recommended for reactive skin, a history of post-inflammatory pigmentation, reduced healing capacity or an area with limited soft-tissue coverage. Settings must remain within the practitioner’s education, clinic protocol and the exact device and cartridge instructions for use.
Areas That Can Be Assessed
- Full face or selected facial areas
- Cheeks, temples, chin and jawline
- Forehead, with adjustment for tissue thickness
- Selected areas around the mouth
- Neck and décolletage in appropriately selected patients
- Individual scars or stretch marks
- Selected body areas where skin needling is considered suitable
Risk, discomfort and healing differ by area. Treatment close to the eyes, over bony areas, on the neck or décolletage, or over body scars requires appropriate technique and aftercare. Microneedling is not surgery and should not be represented as a surgical lift, a method of removing all scarring or a way to permanently alter pore size.
Your consultation at Face and Body Adelaide
Your consultation is used to identify the main concern and decide whether the expected benefit is proportionate to the recovery, cost and risk. Your practitioner may assess:
- Skin type, pigment history and tendency to mark or scar
- The type, depth, location and maturity of scars or stretch marks
- Active acne, cold sores, infection, dermatitis, rosacea flare or other inflammation
- Medical conditions, medicines, allergies and previous cosmetic procedures
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding status
- Bleeding risk, immune function and ability to heal normally
- Recent sun exposure, tanning and use of retinoids or other active skincare
- Expectations, upcoming commitments and tolerance for visible recovery
A test area, medical clearance, staged plan, alternative treatment or postponement may be recommended. Consultation does not mean Dermapen 4 microneedling will be suitable or performed.
What happens during treatment?
The treatment area is cleansed and prepared. Pain-management options are discussed according to the planned depth, area, medical history and clinic protocol. A sterile, single-use cartridge is attached to the device. The practitioner then moves the handpiece over the skin in a controlled pattern, adjusting depth or coverage where appropriate.
Pressure, vibration, scratching, stinging or discomfort can occur despite pain-management measures. Redness and pinpoint bleeding may be visible during treatment, particularly with deeper settings. Appointment length varies with the area and treatment plan. Aftercare is explained before you leave, and follow-up may be recommended.
Recovery and aftercare
Recovery varies with needle depth, number of passes, treatment area, skin characteristics and individual healing. Redness, warmth, swelling, tenderness, tightness, pinpoint bleeding, bruising, dryness, flaking, small crusts or a temporary rough texture can occur. These effects are often most noticeable during the first several days but may last longer following a more intensive procedure or in reactive skin.
Your practitioner will provide instructions about gentle cleansing, moisturising or barrier care, sun protection and when to restart makeup, active skincare, exercise, swimming or other procedures. Avoid picking, rubbing or deliberately removing crusts. Contact the clinic if you develop worsening pain, marked swelling, spreading redness, pus, blistering, fever, eye symptoms or another unexpected change.
Risks and possible complications
Who may not be suitable?
Treatment may be delayed, modified or not recommended where there is active infection, open skin, inflamed acne, a cold-sore outbreak, dermatitis or another active flare; recent tanning or sunburn; impaired healing; significant bleeding risk; or an inability to follow aftercare. Pregnancy or breastfeeding, immune suppression, abnormal scarring, pigment disorders, recent procedures, certain medicines and significant medical conditions require individual assessment against clinic protocol and the device instructions.
Darker skin types are not automatically excluded, but post-inflammatory pigmentation remains a relevant risk. A history of melasma or pigment change requires careful assessment because inflammation can worsen pigmentation in some people. No microneedling procedure should be described as safe or suitable for every skin type or every person.
How many treatments will I need?
There is no standard course that suits everyone. Some people may be offered a series of treatments, while others may be advised to begin with one session, use another approach or avoid treatment. The number and spacing depend on the concern, treatment depth, response, healing and whether further treatment remains proportionate.
Changes, when they occur, may become noticeable gradually after the initial redness and swelling settle. The degree and duration of change vary, and maintenance should not be promised or scheduled automatically. Some concerns need a combined approach, and a lack of meaningful improvement is possible.
Related concerns and treatments
You may find the following pages helpful. These links provide further information and do not mean a particular treatment will be recommended.
Acne Scars & Scarring
Scar type, depth and tethering influence treatment selection. Some scars may require a staged, combined or alternative approach.
Enlarged Pores & Uneven Skin Texture
Pore visibility and texture have several contributors. Microneedling may be considered for selected concerns after assessment.
Wrinkles & Fine Lines
Lines can reflect movement, sun exposure, skin quality, volume change and laxity. Identifying the main contributor supports proportionate planning.
Hyperpigmentation, Sun Spots & Age Spots
Pigmentation requires assessment before skin needling because some types may worsen following inflammation.
RF Microneedling / Fractional RF Needling
RF microneedling adds radiofrequency energy to needle treatment. Mechanism, recovery and risk differ from standard microneedling.
Chemical Peels
Selected peels may be discussed for surface texture or tone concerns. Peel depth, skin type and recovery influence suitability.
Why choose Face and Body Adelaide?
Face and Body Adelaide takes a personalised, conservative and consultation-led approach. Needle depth, speed, coverage and treatment intervals are selected according to the concern, skin characteristics, medical history, healing and tolerance for recovery—not simply the strongest setting available.
Your practitioner will discuss reasonable alternatives, limitations, expected recovery, material risks and costs. There is no obligation to proceed, and treatment may be declined or postponed when the potential benefit is not considered proportionate to the risk.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Dermapen 4 the same as RF microneedling?
Is Dermapen 4 microneedling painful?
Scratching, vibration, pressure, stinging and discomfort can occur. Pain-management options vary with the planned depth and area, but they cannot guarantee a pain-free procedure.
How much downtime should I allow?
Is skin needling suitable for all skin types?
No treatment is automatically suitable for every skin type. Microneedling may be considered across a range of skin tones, but pigment history, current inflammation, settings and aftercare influence risk.
Can Dermapen 4 treat acne scars?
Can microneedling reduce enlarged pores?
Can Dermapen 4 be used for pigmentation?
Can microneedling be used on the body?
How much does treatment cost?
Cost depends on the area, planned intensity, number of sessions, preparation and individual plan. A written quotation and estimated total cost should be provided before you decide whether to proceed.
